Job profit calculator for contractors

Check what a job really made, or will make: enter the price and every cost, and see the profit, the margin, the markup on cost and the profit per labor hour. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Leave sales tax out of the price: it is passed on, not profit. Use your burdened labor cost per hour (see the labor burden calculator). Example numbers, not typical rates: replace every one with your own.

How it works

Labor cost = hours × cost per hour. Direct costs = materials + labor + equipment + disposal + subcontractors + other. Overhead = direct costs × overhead %. Total job cost = direct costs + overhead. Profit = price − total job cost. Margin = profit ÷ price. Markup on cost = profit ÷ total job cost. Profit per labor hour = profit ÷ hours.

Worked example (the values above): 64 hours at $32.00 is $2,048.00 of labor. Direct costs are $1,950.00 + $2,048.00 + $250.00 + $120.00 + $0 + $85.00 = $4,453.00; 10% overhead adds $445.30, so the job cost $4,898.30. On a $6,800.00 price the profit is $1,901.70: a 28.0% margin ($1,901.70 ÷ $6,800.00), a 38.8% markup on cost ($1,901.70 ÷ $4,898.30) and $29.71 per labor hour ($1,901.70 ÷ 64).
